The Rufous Sibia is distributed on the slopes of the Himalayas from north-east Pakistan to southern China. It is normally found at between 1,200 and 3,400 metres and, while it is associated particularly with oak forest, it is also found in mixed forest, secondary growth and gardens.

It has a black cap and a rufous collar and underparts. The wings are black with bluish panels and edgings and the tail is rufous with black and blue-grey bands.
