The Silver-eared Mesia is distributed from northern India along the Himalayas to southern China and southwards through Indochina and the Malaysian Peninsula to Sumatra.

It has a black head, silver ear coverts, a red wing patch with red also on the rump and undertail coverts. The bill is orange-yellow and the legs are yellow.
