It is greyish brown above with a prominent crest the rear of which is rufous. The forehead has whitish streaks which, in the case of these birds, has been covered with pollen from the rhododendrons as the birds were feeding on the nectar. The chin, throat and chest are greyish-pink, the central belly is buff and, as its name implies, the vent is rufous. The bill is reddish-brown while the legs are yellow-brown. | ||||
They feed mainly on insects in the summer as well as the nectar and feed on berries in winter.
There are recordings on xeno-canto and additional information is available via Avibase. |
