The Grey-capped Woodpecker is distributed from the Himalayan foothills through central and eastern China to eastern Siberia and south through Indochina and the Malay Peninsula to Indonesia.

Grey-capped Woodpecker, Deothang, Samdrup Jongkhar, April, March 2008 - click for larger image It is found in a wide variety of forest and woodland habitats up to about 2,000 metres in some areas.

At about 15cm. it is very small. It has a grey crown and a blackish stripe through the eye. The back is black with white bars while underparts are a dirty buff with black stripes. The male has a small patch of red on the nape which is lacking in the female. Though the angle of these photos is not ideal, I think that this bird is a female.

There are recordings on xeno-canto .
