The Lesser Yellownape is distributed along the Himalayas to south and east China, southwards to Indochina, the Malaysian Peninsula and Sumatra and in the highlands of east and west India.

Its most striking feature is the yellow nape with a red border on the rear crown. Upperparts are green while below is greyish with green bars. The male has a red forecrown and malar which is lacking in the female.
