The Great Barbet is distributed from north-east Pakistan through the Himalayas to eastern China and south to northern Indochina, Thailand and Myanmar. It is found in forest and wooded valleys usually between about 800 to 2,400 metres.

Great Barbet, Pele La, Wangdue Phodrang, Bhutan, March 2008 - click for larger image It is the largest barbet with a large yellow bill with black culmen, a dark blue head, a brown mantle and green wings and tail. Underparts are brown with yellow-buff streaks and the undertail coverts are red.

It feeds on fruit, seeds, insects and flowers such as those of the rhododendron seen here in photos 1 and 2.
