The Golden-throated Barbet is distributed from Nepal to south China and southwards to Indochina, Myanmar and the Malay Peninsula.

It is found in montane forest and is usually at higher elevations than Blue-throated Barbet P. asiatica and is generally between 900 and 2,200 metres.
