The Eurasian Nutcracker is distributed from France and Scandinavia eastwards across northern Asia and through the Himalayas to south-west and north-east China.

It is found in dry coniferous forest.

Eurasian Nutcracker, Yutang La, Bumthang, Bhutan, April 2008 - click for larger image It is brow with white spotting on the mantle head and breast with black wings and a black tail with prominent white edges.

It feeds on seeds, nuts and insect larvae. Photos 1 and 2 show a bird cracking open some food on a stone.

It also carries seeds and nuts in a pouch under the tongue and buries these in a cache as a source of food during the winter.
