Von der Decken's Hornbill is distributed in East Africa from Ethiopia to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush and wooded grassland where it feeds mainly on insects and small animals with some fruits and seeds.

The male has an orange-red bill with creamy tip while the female, shown here, has an all-black bill.

Baron Carl Claus von der Decken was a German explorer in the 19th century who travelled in East Africa and Madagascar. He was killed in 1865 by Somalis.
