The Swallow-tailed Bee-eater is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara except in the Congo Basin and in the extreme south. It is found in wooded savanna.

It has a strongly forked blue tail. The subspecies found in Ghana, M. h. chrysolaimus, has a pale blue forehead and supercilium.
