The Ethiopian Bee-eater is endemic to the Horn of Africa, mainly in Ethiopia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of wooded habitats.

Some authorities treat it as a sub-species of Blue-breasted Bee-eater M. variegatus but it is larger, with a rich blue forehead, a darker belly and a different voice.
