The Splendid Sunbird is distributed in tropical Africa north of the Equator from Senegal to South Sudan. There is a distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in wooded savanna, forest edges and clearings and gardens. It is not found inside the forest. It feeds on nectar, seeds, spiders and insects.

Male Splendid Sunbird, Shai Hills, Ghana, May 2011 - click for larger image The male, seen here in photos 1 and 2, has a purple head and throat and a bright red breast with some glossy purple and blue. The belly is black. The female, as in photo 3, has some dusky streaks on the breast and a pale yellow supercilium.

The song is a series of about 7 clear and separated notes.
