The Variable Sunbird is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara but avoiding the tropical rain forest and the south of the continent. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. In Ethiopia it is found in a wide variety of wooded and bush habitats up to 2,600 metres.

This sub-species C. v. albiventris with a white belly is found to the east of the Rift Valley while C. v. fazoqlensis with a yellow belly is found to the west of the Rift Valley.
