The Shining Sunbird is distributed along the west coast of the Red Sea and into Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. Some authorities lump it with Arabian Sunbird C. hellmayri. It is found in semi-arid bush country and open woodland up to about 2,000 metres.

Juvenile Shining Sunbird, Sof Omar, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image The male has a green back, head and throat with a small purple cap. There is a broad red breast band and a black belly and yellow tufts at the bend of the wings can sometimes be seen. The female is very different and looks much like the juvenile in photo 2 but the juvenile shows a black throat.
