The Mariqua Sunbird is distributed in eastern and southern Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open woodland and bush country up to about 2,000 metres.

The male has a broad maroon breast band bordered above with blue. It has a green head and back and a dark belly. The female, seen here in photos 4 and 5, is greyish brown above with a short supercilium and it is yellowish below with dark streaks.
