Schlegel's Asity is endemic to the north-west of Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in deciduous dry forest and in rain forest up to 800 metres.

Schlegel's Asity, Ankarafantsika, Madagascar, November 2016 2016 - click for larger image The male in breeding plumage, seen here, is unmistakable with a bright multicoloured caruncle around the eye. This virtually disappears in non-breeding plumage and is lacking in the female.

Hermann Schlegel was a German zoologist who worked at Leiden for Jacob Temminck and who was the first to use trinomials to indicate sub-species.
