The Rufous-chested Swallow is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara. It is resident near the Equator and a breeding visitor to the north and south. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open country, often near water.

It has a dark blue hood, rufous underparts and rump and very long tail streamers.
