The Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk is distributed rather patchily in eastern Africa from Eritrea and Ethiopia to South Africa with a disjunct population in Angola. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It nests in montane forest and forest edge but hunts over open country such as savannah looking for birds, rodents, lizards, bats, etc..

From its cheeks to its belly it is a rich rufous colour while the vent is white.
