Mosa Park, Ifaty, Madagascar The Madagascar Sparrowhawk is endemic to Madagascar and is found in a variety of forest habitats (primary, gallery and spiny) mainly below 1,000 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is only rarely seen in secondary growth or degraded forest. It is classified as Near Threatened. It looks very similar to the more common Frances's Sparrowhawk A. francesiae but lacks barring on the undertail coverts and has narrow streaks on the throat rather than one central dark stripe. It also feeds very largely on small birds while Frances's Sparrowhawk has a wider diet including many reptiles. |
