The Long-tailed Hawk is distributed in tropical West and Central Africa where it is found in the forest interior and occasionally seen near tracks and clearings. It is not particularly scarce but it is very secretive and rarely seen so consequently under-recorded.

It feeds on flying squirrels, bats, rodents and birds.

Its most distinctive feature is its long, graduated tail which has thin white bars. The back is slaty-grey and underparts are chestnut apart from the white crissum.

Its call is two plaintive whistles, the second being slightly shorter and higher in pitch.
