The Red-necked Falcon is distributed in tropical and sub-tropical Africa south of the Sahara and in the Indian subcontinent. It is found in open country with clumps of trees and, in Africa, is particularly associated with Borassus palms. It feeds mainly on birds.

It is a smallish falcon with short wings. Blue-grey above it has a rufous head and nape and a dark moustache on white cheeks.
