The Red-knobbed Coot is distributed in southern Africa and up the east of Africa to Ethiopia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in fresh water lakes and lagoons and in swamps and can occur up to 3,000 metres.

Adults have 2 knobs above the very white bill and shield. They are more prominent during the breeding season but less so in these photos.
