The Common Moorhen is widely distributed throughout the Old World and is found in a variety of freshwater wetlands. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

The subspecies found in Madagascar and nearby islands, G. c. pyrrhorrhoa is distinguished by the buff undertail-coverts compared to the usual white seen elsewhere.
