The Black Crowned-crane is distributed in a band of scattered populations across Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of wet habitats including moister agricultural land which is where we found this pair.

It is classified as Vulnerable given the rapid decline in population through both loss of habitat and trapping for the illegal international pet trade.
