The Red-fronted Barbet is distributed in East Africa from Ethiopia to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in woodland and wooded grassland where it feeds on fruit, seeds and insects.

The nest is a hole excavated in a branch of a tree or similar.
