The Olive-capped Coua is distributed in the south-west of Madagascar where it is found in spiny forest and dry deciduous forest up to 900 metres.

Traditionally treated as a sub-species of Red-capped Coua C. ruficeps, Birdlife International have split it on the basis of its olive versus rufous crown, its cool grey versus warm grey breast with buffy-white versus pale-rufous belly to vent, and its different vocalisation.
