The Red-capped Coua is endemic to north-west Madagascar where it is found in dry deciduous forest and semi-arid scrub up to 850 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Essentially a terrestrial bird, when alarmed it may fly a short distance and into a tree and it is in a tree that it will nest.
