This species has been split from Southern Red-headed Weaver A. rubriceps by Birdlife International on the basis of the broad black mask vs. black lores, the red vs. yellow edges to the flight feathers and the grey vs. yellowish head and throat of the female.

Northern Red-headed Weaver, Lake Langano, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image The Northern Red-headed Weaver is distributed in a band across Africa just south of the Sahara and in eastern Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. In Ethiopia it is found at between 750 metres and 2,000 metres in a variety of woodlands and grasslands with scattered trees.
