The Black-bellied Firefinch is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Equator from Senegal to the west of Kenya. It is found in savanna and at the edges of gallery forest where it feeds on the ground on grass seeds, ants and termites.

Black-bellied Firefinch, Mole NP, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image The male, shown here, is mainly deep wine-red with black on the lower breast and undertail coverts. The bill is two-tone with bluish black above and paler below. The female is brown with a grey head and a red patch in front of the eye.
