The Northern Ground-hornbill is distributed in a broad band south of the Sahara from Senegal to Ethiopia and Eritrea. See the map at Birdlife International.

It feeds on small vertebrates and invertebrates as well as seeds and carrion. They are usually seen foraging in pairs.

The male has blue facial skin around the eye and an inflatable sac of red and blue skin on the throat. The female's throat sac is all blue.
