Ghana and Ethiopia

The African Grey Hornbill is distributed throughout most of tropical Africa except for the Congo Basin. There is also a population in the south-west of the Arabian Peninsula. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in savanna, savanna woodland and forest edges where it feeds mainly on insects.

African Grey Hornbill, Tono Dam, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image The birds in photos 1 to 3 are males. The females, as seen in photo 4 have a smaller bill with a red tip and a pale yellow upper mandible.

The call is a series of rhythmic, piping notes.
