The Mountain Wagtail is distributed in a number of areas in Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. They are found beside fast-flowing rocky streams. Despite the English name altitude is not important. It requires a steep gradient to provide waterfalls, rapids and rushing water.
