The Madagascar Wagtail is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in open areas near water up to 2,600 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is a large wagtail with a narrow black breastband, a grey head with a white spot on the ear-coverts. The back is grey to olive while the throat and breast are white and the belly yellow.
