Maxwell's Black Weaver is distributed in discontinuous areas in Africa south of the Sahara from Sierra Leone in West Africa to Uganda. It is found in lowland forest where it forages for insects, berries and nectar at various levels but usually higher up. It often hangs upside down.

It is black with a whitish nape and a pale eye.
