The Madagascar Magpie-robin is distributed in the east of Madagascar in forest habitats up to 1,800 metres. The habitat is much less open than that used by the similar Pelzeln's Magpie-robin. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

The nominate sub-species is distributed in north-east Madagascar and has a black belly.
