The African Dusky Flycatcher is distributed mainly in the eastern side of the continent. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in highland forest, woodland and gardens from 900 to 3,400 metres and is one of the most common of African flycatchers.

Small and dumpy with a rather short tail it often perches upright and makes short flights to catch its prey before returning to the same perch.
