The African Fish-eagle is distributed throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a wide variety of fresh, alkaline and salt water habitats while young and immatures can be seen flying over drier areas.

They feed mainly on fish but also on small birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects.

Photo 1 shows a fully mature adult. It takes 5 to 6 years to reach full maturity.

The specific name vocifer means "to cry aloud" which is very apt.
