Hemprich's Hornbill is distributed in the Horn of Africa and into Kenya. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry bush and woodland usually near cliffs and rocky outcrops mainly between 1,600 and 3,900 metres.

It is blackish above with pale fringes to the wings and a whitish belly. The bill is browny-red and the male has a brighter red lower mandible than the female. Both sexes have patches of bare skin on the throat but the male's are black while the female's are pale and more obvious.

It feeds mainly on insects but also on fruits, lizards and chameleons.
