The Half-collared Kingfisher is distributed in Eritrea and Ethiopia, in a broad band south of the Congo Basin and in South Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in streams and rivers but is shy and uncommon. Its breeding territory covers 1 km of river.

The dark blue patches at the sides of the breast are diagnostic.
