It is found in a wide variety of water habitats but requires nearby perches from which to fish. It also frequently fishes from a hovering position so is found on open waters. The hovering technique is used more in windy conditions than in calm. Small fish can be eaten whole, head first while larger fish are brought back to a perch and beaten against that perch. | |||

The male has a double black breast band while the female has a single broken breast band so the birds in photos 1 ans 2 are females. Photo 5 showing some brown fringes is of a juvenile. | |||
