The Green Woodhoopoe is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara except in arid and forest regions. It is found in savanna, woodland, scrubland and gardens amongst a variety of habitats.

Green Wood Hoopoe, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image Its plumage looks blackish from a distance but is glossy violet-green with a long tail showing white spots on the outer tail feathers. The two white wingbars are conspicuous in flight.
