The Black-billed Woodhoopoe is distributed in the Horn of Africa where it is found in semi-arid bush and woodland up to 2,100 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It forages for arthropods moving up and down tree trunks probing into crevices with its long curved bill.
