The Madagascar Hoopoe is endemic to Madagascar where it is found mainly below 1,000 metres in dry, open country with some wooded cover.See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Madagascar Hoopoe, Ankarafantsika NP, Madagascar, November 2016 - click for larger image Compared to Common Hoopoe U. epops it has a greyer back and a paler breast but the main distinguishing feature is the voice. The song is a soft purring trill as opposed to the distinctive “hoo-poo-poo” of the Common Hoopoe.
