The Forest Fody is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in primary evergreen forest up to about 2,000 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

A member of the weaver family, it is very similar in looks to the Red Fody F. madagascariensis apart from the olive-grey lower breast and belly.

Its voice is similar to that of the Red Fody.
