The Baglafecht Weaver is distributed from Eritrea through Ethiopia to Malawi and westward to Nigeria. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found mainly at between 1,100 and 3,000 metres at forest edges, woodland, wetlands and gardens.

There are several sub-species with varying patterns on the nape, upperparts and belly and most sub-species have breeding and non-breeding plumage. All have yellow or green edging to the wings and whitish to yellow eyes.

Photos 1 and 2 were taken in Addis Ababa and are of the nominate sub-species while photo 3 from the Harenna Forest is a female of the sub-species P. b. reichenowi, the only sub-species without a non-breeding plumage.
