Madagascar The Red Fody is endemic to Madagascar though it has been introduced into some nearby islands plus St Helena and the Arabian Peninsula. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open country, farmland and in towns up to about 2,400 metres. |

The male is crimson red with a black line through the eye, black streaks on the mantle and black-and-white wings. The female, seen here in photo 3 is generally olive-brown and is similar to the non-breeding male. It has a high-pitched trilling song. |
