The Ethiopian Black-headed Oriole is endemic to Ethiopia and Eritrea where it is found in highland forest at between 600 and 3,000 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It differs from Eastern Black-headed Oriole O. larvatus in being larger, having a grey panel on the wing and having a more modulated voice reaching higher frequencies.
