The Cuckoo Roller is endemic to Madagascar and the Comoros Islands where it is found in a wide variety of habitats up to 2,000 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is relatively difficult to see since it spends a lot of time sitting motionless often in the tree canopy.

It is now normally placed in a family on its own the Leptosomidae. This is associated with the families of Rollers and Ground-rollers but recent DNA studies now suggest that it is sister to a large group including Rollers and Trogons.

Its song is loud and distinctive. Local belief is that it heralds the end of rain.
