The Crimson-rumped Waxbill is distributed in East Africa from Sudan to Tanzania. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in acacia woodlands and damp grassland up to 1,900 metres.

It is superficially similar to Common Waxbill E. astrild but has a crimson rump, a black bill and red edges to wing feathers.
