June 2011

The Black-rumped Waxbill is distributed in Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Equator between Senegal and Mauritania in the west and Eritrea and Uganda in the east. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in grassy woodland, dry grassland, thickets and close to water.

It feeds on grass seeds and small insects.

Note the black rump and black tail with white edges. It is similar to the Common Waxbill E. astrild but has white rather than black undertail coverts.
